Pathways for Growth: Career Stories from LPPI
In July 2025, LPPI launched Pathways for Growth, a new series celebrating the diverse career journeys of colleagues across the organisation. The series reflects LPPI’s commitment to the personal and professional development of its people, and showcases the many routes to personal and professional development within the business.
Helen Connor: From admin to investment strategy – a journey powered by curiosity
Originally from New Zealand, Helen began her UK career in a temporary administrative role at LPFA. With a love for maths and a desire to challenge herself, she took a bold step and began studying for actuarial exams. That first pass sparked a new ambition and led to a role as an actuarial assistant at LPPI, supported by mentorship and exam sponsorship.
Helen progressed through several roles, including analyst and senior analyst in the Risk team, before becoming an associate actuary in 2022. When an opportunity arose in the Investment Strategy team, she embraced the challenge, supported by colleagues who championed her skills and potential.
Today, Helen plays a key role in portfolio advisory, helping partner funds achieve their long-term outcomes through strategic thinking and collaborative decision-making. She credits her mentors, especially Sarah Morris, for helping her grow both professionally and personally.
“I always pinch myself and think, is this a dream? Am I actually working in an investment strategy team now after starting out in admin work?”
Helen’s story is just one example of how LPPI empowers its people to grow, explore new paths, and thrive in their careers.
Carl Jeffreys: Shaping a career through collaboration and curiosity
Carl Jeffreys, Senior Service Delivery Manager, joined LPPI in 2018 as an ICT Project Manager on a short-term contract. He soon secured a permanent role as ICT Team Lead, and during LPPI’s transition to a standalone investment business in 2020, stepped into a newly created position that allowed him to help shape the organisation’s evolving technology landscape.
His development has been supported by LPPI’s structured approach to growth, including the use of talent profiles to map out aspirations and training needs. Carl completed internal training and earned a globally recognised ITIL qualification, funded by LPPI.
He values LPPI’s “no fear” culture, where stepping outside your comfort zone is encouraged, and the open office environment where even the most senior people are approachable.
“Career growth isn’t handed to us, it’s something we shape through choices, feedback, and continuous learning. That mindset has helped me take ownership of my development and make the most of every opportunity.”
