Ministers have launched a consultation on whether to restore access to the LGPS for councillors in England, and extending it to mayors.
Local government minister Steve Reed had previously announced the plan at Labour Party Conference late last month.
The reforms would align England with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland where elected members already have access. It comes as part of ongoing local government reorganisation and devolution, with responsibility held by mayors and councillors expanding significantly.
The consultation will run until 22 December.
